Britain is now the most intensely monitored country in the world, according to surveillance experts, with 4.2 million CCTV cameras installed, equivalent to one for every 14 people.

It would be interesting and perhaps even relevant to know what a “surveillance expert” is ? Who these “surveillance experts” are ? On what factual information is this 4.2 million figure of CCTVs that are currently “installed” in the United Kingdom based on ?

It would be interesting and perhaps even relevant to know which company or companies supplied these 4.2 million CCTVs and how much they were paid ?

It would be interesting and perhaps even relevant to know which company or companies “installed” these 4.2 million CCTVs and how much they were paid ?

It would be interesting and perhaps even relevant to know who monitors and maintains these 4.2 million CCTVs and how much this costs the United Kingdom taxpayers per annum ?

The BBC recently reported in a news article that:

“Talking” CCTV cameras that tell off people dropping litter or committing anti-social behaviour are to be extended to 20 areas across England.

The BBC also reported in the same news article that:

About £500,000 will be spent adding speaker facilities to existing cameras.

CCTV can help fight crime and disorder. It is occasionally used in court to as evidence to prove someone was in a certain place or did a certain thing.

CCTV can also help improve community safety by acting as a preventative tool, putting someone off committing a crime like robbery if they know their actions are being recorded.

There are a few simple rules to ensure that CCTV is not rendered useless:

Change tapes daily
Use them no more than 12 times
Keep tapes for at least a month
Use good quality tapes and check them by playing them on a different machine
Ensure that the picture is clear – it needs to be clear enough to identify people and vehicles
Check that the time and date displays are correct
Check that the picture is covering the right area
Make sure there is enough light for the camera to give a proper picture
Your CCTV provider, security officer or local police crime prevention officer can help you improve your system.
