Cheney, Nugent to hunt Buffalo ?
In a recent interview Reuters reported that:
For the first time in nearly a decade, hunters on Saturday begin tracking and killing buffalo on the National Elk Refuge in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where federal wildlife managers plan to cut the herd from 1,200 to 500 over the next five years.
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officials say buffalo at the refuge, home to one of the nation’s largest free-roaming herds of the symbol of the American West, must be killed because of overgrazing and because they carry diseases that could be transmitted to domestic livestock.
The hunt aims to cull 300 buffalo — also called bison — by December.
Jonathan Lovvorn, a vice president of the US Humane Society and attorney with the Fund for Animals was quoted regarding the hunt:
“Hunting these bison is like hunting parked cars…”
Before white settlers began to push into the vast west in any great numbers, an estimated 50-60 million buffalo freely roamed upon the Great Plains. American Indians hunted them for food and other necessities, and a harmonious ebb and flow between man and beast prevailed.(source)

Currently there is less than 4000 wild buffalo in North America…There are approximately 350.000 captive bison being raised for the livestock/meat industry….(source)

Millions of Native north americans lived quite well for thousands of years prior to Columbus’s arrival almost solely on the renewable sustenance provided by the buffalo herds….
The president of Venezuela courageously changed Venezuela’s Oct. 12 Columbus Day to the Day of Indigenous Resistance.
“They executed an aboriginal every 10 minutes – the biggest genocide in registered in history” , Chavez said as he described how Spanish, Portuguese and English invaders slaughtered millions of native inhabitants. The indigenous population of the Americas plummeted from 100 million at the time of Columbus’ arrival to just three million 150 years later.(source)

Chief of the Blackfoot(source of image)
“Let them kill, skin, and sell until the buffalo is exterminated, as it is the only way to bring lasting peace and allow civilization to advance.”
What do you think ?
If the Yellowstone wild bison herd does actually need culling isn’t there a better solution ?
Can we not relocate some of the bison and establish some new wild bison herds ?
Or if that is not feasable can we at least allow some young Native americans to hunt them and reembrace their culture…
There has got to be a better solution….

I am so sorry to hear they are to be killed.

You feature some pretty depressing images about the destruction of wildlife and the environment here at your blog. I like it. Keep it up.

Does the past mean nothing to these morons – they slaughtered millions of buffalo (not to mention those who depended on the buffalo) last time round.

I think we need to keep everything in perspective. The intent is not to destroy but preserve. There is a natural cycle that man constantly obstructs and therefore needs to correct. Buffalo will die starvation if they overpopulate. If they are diseased then this also needs to be taken into consideration. I DO like the idea of possibly allowing the First Nations/Native Americans to stage a hunt to cull the herd. I think we could all learn from something like this.

you are doing a great job by bringing out the obvious but an ignored fact.

It’s a great post. I think we need to repeat to more and more people, the Creation is not our creation. We are a little part of this Creation and we have no rights to distruct it,’cose we distruct ourselves. Unfortunatelly many persons do not understand it.And everybody of us,speaking about the Love to every part of Creation does great job.

Wow. What a great post. Its to bad most Americans don’t stop to consider this sort of thing, especially when we celebrate holidays that aren’t ours.

The Buffalo Field Campaign is also playing a huge part in helping to save the Yellowstone Buffalo. Check them out at: http://www.buffalofieldcampaign.org

Cheney makes me sick. He reminds me of that creature that lived in the cave in “Lord of the Rings,” the one who kept saying, “my pretty” while he looked at the ring… greedy, disgusting, everything vile that there is… can’t think of a single redeeming quality.

This is a great eye-opening article. These are the stories that need to be told to our children . . . .

What about the people who are hunting, thinning the herd, and looking for EATING quality animals rather than trophy animals? Is this any worse than going to the grocery store? Or is it in fact better, because those folks know EXACTLY what it means to take a life in order to continue life – the circle, that native americans so revere? Assuming, of course, that it’s okay to eat meat in your world…
Or perhaps it’s better to take these wild animals that have known nothing but freedom their entire lives – and round ‘em up, put ‘em in pens, load ‘em into stock trucks and bring them to another location that has ROOM and FEED for them. How many would die or kill themselves out of sheer panic and resistance? What would you be adding to their thread of instinct that isn’t there now – trucks and engines and roads and confinement and god knows what else? Probably vaccines and feed supplements like the ones at Custer State Park – the first steps toward domestication.
The real facts here are that the bison are competing with the Elk on the National Elk refuge, for feed. The Refuge is right next to Grand Teton Park, which is SEVERELY overgrazed – if you saw the damage and thought it was domestic cows, you’d be up in arms.
The Elk are fed through a government program because their range (traditionally the entire plains area of North America) has been encroached upon by all of us. To stop feeding the bison, we must stop feeding the elk. To stop feeding the elk, we must endure a decade or more of death by starvation until the herds are reduced by great amounts and/or stop wintering in this location due to lack of feed. This would cause the deaths of numerous (reintroduced) wolves, and scatter them around the country as they followed the elk, who at this point would be just trying to survive.
It’s easy to place all the blame on the hunters, but the money from the license fees goes back into the winter feed program, allowing the remaining bison and elk to continue with their wild existence. The bison herd is reduced in size to allow the land to recover – it will grow steadily again if the remaining bison are in a healthy state – ie, if there’s enough feed to keep good winter weight on them.
I’m okay with all of this. But then, I like organic meat.

Why not have Nugent hunt Cheney? Wouldn’t that at least solve some of our problems? I do think there has to be a better way. What about sterilizing some of the males, or relocating them?
